Dr. Peter Teague ’73 – Lancaster, PA

Dr. Teague is the president of Lancaster Bible College. Peter lives in the College’s manse with his wife, Paulette, also an SC graduate of 1973.  Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to join us.  They have three daughters and one son.  Of his time at Sterling College, he remembers good friends like Mike Sullivan and Dick Robbin.  He worked for Gil’s IGA.

Grace Nichol ’64 – Media, PA

I had dinner with Grace at the Concordville Inn.  I had learned from my visit earlier with Flos Griswold that Grace’s father had led Flos to the Lord oh so many years ago.

Stan ’57 & Joanne Maughlin – Falls Church, VA

Stan showed me all of his souvenirs filled with memories of his missionary days in Africa.  Stan met his wife, Joanne while they were both serving there.  They are still in contact with their African friends and several ongoing ministries there.

Martha ’56 (Reefer) & Tom Doutt – Apollo, PA

Martha is now living in the very house she grew up in on the outskirts of Apollo, PA.  She had first heard about Sterling College from an alumnus named Allan Richardson.  He was an interim pastor at a local church.  She doesn’t believe that she’s been back to the SC campus since the 1970s!  She and her husband, Tom, have been married for 50 years. I’ve since learned that Tom passed away in July.  This picture was taken in April.

Richard Madsen F49 – Grove City, PA

I love it when I meet a Prayer Warrior on the road!  This retired Presbyterian pastor, Richard, is indeed a Prayer Warrior!  He not only loves to pray for Sterling College, but he also loves to send care packages to the SC students he’s assigned to pray for every year!  Growing up, his hometown was Rock Island, IL.  He ended up leaving Sterling College for seminary.  He met his first, late wife, Mary (Downie) at SC in the late 1940s.

Lewis “Gil” ’51 & Sarah ’51 (Chalfant) Wilson –

New Wilmington, PA

These folks have been through quite a bit lately.  When I visited, Gil was recovering from surgery to remove pancreatic cancer. He asked me to pass on this message: “I would like to say thank you to all those who sent cards, called and for your prayers”.

Gil told me that he asked Sarah to marry him two weeks after he met her at SC.  His daughter also attended and met her husband at SC.  They have four daughters, 13 grand children and one great grandchild with two more on the way!  When they were at Sterling College, Dr. McCreery was the president and they fondly remember SC folks such as Carol Gene (English) Brownlee, Prof. Taylor and, also, who could forget Aunt Ella! Gil was involved in football, basketball and baseball.  Sarah was involved in the art club and WAA.  She told me that she lived in Campbell Hall just above the Boiler Room.

Erinn Holmes ’00 – Brooklyn, NY

Okay, okay!  So I must admit that the idea of navigating my rental car to the middle of Brooklyn, NY was a bit intimidating.  However, it wasn’t too bad…I just allowed myself plenty of time!  So, yep, this Kansas girl found her way to a good friend from her college years!  Miss Erinn Holmes, rising star actress indeed!

It was so great to see Erinn again and then to travel with her by subway to Harlem in order to attend her play rehearsal that night.  Erinn was part of the cast for the premier showing of “The Guest at Central Park West.”  That evening, the cast sat around the table with the playwright and read through the entire script.  It was fascinating.  The other cool part was actually meeting her cast members; one was a gentleman by the name of John Marshall Jones.

Erinn is very much doing the whole live-in-NY-actress thing.  She shares an apartment with friends, auditions for as many shows as she can and works a temp job as much as she can.  She has also been doing her fair share of one-line appearances on One Life Live lately.  Go Erinn!

Jack Hoffman ’74 – Sea Cliff, NY

Jack told me that his first memory of SC was a crazy weather day.  He drove from the Wichita airport to Sterling in the fog.  “It was like a version of the Twilight Zone,” he said.  Jack has four children, three girls and a boy.  He’s been married to his wife for 27 years.  Jack works from home for Chase Manhattan Bank doing main frame software and processing.  A friend from SC he remembers is Kent Davidson of Roanoke, VA.  hoffy39@aol.com

Jack ’57 & Darlene (Dunkle) ’57 Largent – Lancaster, PA

I felt an instant connection with my friends Jack and Darlene.  I had never met them before but soon felt as if I had known them forever.  Jack and Darlene are now retired.  They were missionaries in Indonesia straight out of Sterling College for 12 years with OMF and then served as home staff for 28 years.  They fondly remembered Kay Kane and the Eddies from their time at SC.

Jaci (Wilson) ’51 & Bill F51 Moberly – Arlington, VA

I had a delicious coffee cake, fresh strawberries and coffee with the Moberly’s!   I was surprised to learn that Jackie is the granddaughter to one of our longest working SC professors, Samuel A. Wilson (the one for whom Wilson Hall is named)!

The Moberly’s told me that they met each other at SC.  Bill says that he knocked Jaci down when he was helping to move mattresses around in Campbell Hall (a women’s dorm then).  Jaci recalls how she and some girls short-sheeted the guy’s beds on Sadie Hawkins Day.  They were married their senior year.  Bill then went with the military to serve in Germany.  They are now, of course, married with two grown children (1 son and 1 daughter) and they have ___ grandchildren.    Bill said “I have to get old but, I don’t have to grow up”.

Still April 2007...

Bob & Sandy Veitch – New Wilmington, PA

I had a wonderful visit with Sterling College’s former president (1989 – 1996).  My visit turned into a lovely dinner at a local restaurant (I tried a perogie – not bad) and a brief drive-by tour of Westminster College nearby.  I also saw many Amish farmers and their houses with light blue painted doors. The Veitch’s are now retired and enjoying life with occasional visits from grandchildren.

Dr. Veitch told me that he is “still grateful” to Gordon Kling for “teaching him to dance in the middle of (the Sterling College) cafeteria.”  I’m going to have to get Gordon’s version of this story.

Wayne Shierant ’70 – West Hampton, NY

Wayne, I’m so sorry!  When I tell everyone what you’re doing now, they’re shocked!  They keep telling me that they thought you would end up in jail.

Well, everyone, Wayne is doing pretty great!  Wayne is the Athletic Director for the West Islip Public Schools.  waynemch22@optonline.net

Note to self: The New Jersey Turnpike is a completely different animal!  We’re definitely not in Kansas anymore!  I completely missed an exit (and visit with Gentry Sutton) and didn’t realize it until I was near Philadelphia!  Fortunately, Gentry now works at SC!

Mary Ellen (Anderson) Scott ’47 – Verona, PA

Mary Ellen Scott lives in a beautiful retirement community.  Mary Ellen told me that her parent’s both attended Cooper College.  Mary Ellen met her husband, Rev. Harold Scott, who died in 1999, also at Sterling College.

After Sterling College, Mary Ellen received her Masters in Library Arts.  She has been a librarian since 1968.  Now retired, she volunteers doing archive library work at Pittsburg Theological Seminary.  She has three sons.  One of her sons, John Charles Scott also attended Sterling College and graduated in 1979.
