Sterling CollegeALUMNI120 Alumni in 2007!

Rev. Ed Fish ’48 – Omaha, NE

After finishing his 4 years of work at SC in a two and a half year time span, Ed was encouraged and inspired to continue his education.  He did this at seminary in Pittsburgh, PA.  Today, Ed is a retired Presbyterian pastor.  His wife, Grace (Thomas) Fish ’50, passed away in 2004.  He has a son, a daughter and three grandchildren.

Text Box: From Omaha, I flew to Boston, MA and rented a car. I had never before been in Massachusetts! I got there just in time for the tail end of the Nor’easter they were having. Fortunately, I had no complications on the road; just rain and more rain!

Steve Ekerberg ’96 – East Boston, MA

Steve works as a flight attendant for United Airlines.  He is also very actively involved in the airline’s union.  Steve was kind enough to meet me at the airport, help me find my way around town and let me stay at his place while he was out of town on business. What a nice guy!

Florence “Flos” (Bellina) Griswold ’70 – Hudson, MA

I met Flos for a lovely lunch at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, MA.  This Inn was visited by Longfellow in the mid 1800s and the inspiration for his book of poems Tales of a Wayside Inn.  I especially enjoyed Flos introducing me to a traditional Massachussett’s dessert called Indian Pudding (made w/ ground corn meal and molasses and baked for hours.).  It was delicious!

Flos has been married to her husband Larry for 33 years. They have two sons, Jeremiah (who got married in Oct.) and Phillip (who created the illustrations for the children’s book CIRCUS).  Flos has lived in the Boston area for 30 years and says she still minds the long, cold New England winters.  She also says she still has a hard time understanding some of the Boston accent.

Flos’ “day job” is teaching (students grades 4-8) to read who have dyslexia; and 2 nights a week teaching English Language Learners (adults) at the local public library.

Some memorable folks from Flos’ time at SC are: "The McCreery Maids" (fabulous singing group)= Sandy Jessup, Kathleen Holmes, Ellen Dingwall, Judy Ford & Laurie Shedlock, and herself; Sylvia Reiff, Barb & Rick Hemphill, Sam Barbera, Mike Barbera, Sheryl (Tedford) & Tim Jaeger; Profs: Gail Garwick, Charles DeSanto, Gordon Zahradnik,& Dale Snyder, just to name a few.

Bob Sullivan ’62 – Millbury, MA

Bob is retired from teaching high school physical education and social studies.  He has been married to his wife, Rita, for 43 years.  (I know for sure because he dug out his marriage certificate to make sure)  Now that he’s retired, he referees basketball games and umpires softball games for the local schools.  He also used to race and breed Irish Greyhounds.  The greyhound in the picture is named Oscar, who raced as Master of Glory after coming to the US from Ireland.  papabear84@charter.net

Coleman Crenshaw ’03 – North Providence, RI

Dr. Tim ’80 & Melanie (Ward) ’76 Rice – Cherokee, IA

I was visiting the Ellis’ and Sayler’s when then told me of another couple in town who were also SC graduates.  So, I called them (The Rice’s) up and they were kind enough to let me briefly come over and say hello.  Living on the north edge of the Cherokee community, Tim is a family practice physician and Melanie does part-time social work with special needs kids.

Rev. Bob ’54 & Barbara Meanor – Omaha, NE

The Meanors were very kind to let me stay at their lovely home in Omaha.  Bob was even kinder to drive me to the airport.  Bob is a retired Presbyterian Minister.  He still works, however, at a local retirement home.  Bob has been the “leader of the pack” for developing our “Missouri Valley Chapter” in the area.  We met together the evening of Sunday, April 15 at Bob & Fayetta Molby’s house.  To send Bob Meanor an email: bbmeanor2@tconl.com

Bob ’53 & Fayetta Molby’s house – Elkhorn, NE

The Molby’s were our hosts for the Missouri Valley alumni gathering.  Bob and Fayetta  celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in  August. Bob writes, “I retired as a pastor in March of 1992 having served in the American Baptist Churches, USA since I was ordained on November 19, 1949 at the Baptist Church in Raymond, KS while I was a student at Sterling.”  He still serves as Interim pastor from time to time in local Baptist and Presbyterian churches. Bob & Fayetta have three daughters, one of which, Shelly (Molby) Marx, also attended SC with the class of 1983.  They also have six grandchildren.

Russ ‘63 & Cheryl Irwin—Lincoln, NE

Russ and Cheryl have been married for 16 years.  They have three married children and seven grandkids.  Russ works for the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality as a trainer of wastewater treatment plant operators and also in the operator certification program.  So his job keeps him busy in the office, classroom and in the field.  His wife, Cheryl works for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln as an editor and writer of newsletters related to agricultural activities.  For Russ, some memorable SC professors were Dr. Thompson, Prof. Thompson, Rev. Taylor and Dr. Bakis.

Bill ’65 & Mary Ann (Miller) ’66 Irwin – Denison, IA

Bill & Mary Ann are another one of our many married alumni couples who met at Sterling College; they sat next to each other in chapel.  Married for 41 years, they have two children and seven grandchildren.  Bill is a retired educator and Ford body shop manager. Now enjoying their retirement days, the couple enjoys church activities, traveling and visiting grandkids.  To sent them a message: bmairwin@frontiernet.net

Suzanne (Bewick) Lewis ’65 – Marlboro, MA

I met Suzanne at her work in Waltham.  She was planning to retire at the end of June with EDCO Collaborative, an educational resource company.  While she has many fond memories of SC, she mentioned Fran Calderwood’s Bible class and Prof. Taylor.  She stays in close touch with Bill & Betty Calderwood.

Rodney Dumond ’92 –

Without even trying, this day was filled with fellow Sterling College theatre majors (I also majored in theatre).  One of the first things Rod asked me was “Does Diane (DeFranco Kling) still say ‘Be Brilliant!’ before every show?”. (Yes, she does) Rod is the Technical Theatre Director for Connecticut College located in New London, CT.  He remembers his time at SC and the Klings fondly.  Rodney is married and has a son.
